You received a party invitation in your email inbox. Curious, you opened it to check the event details. The email took you to a link where you entered your email and password to log in to view the invite. And that's how, unknowingly, you fell victim to a phishing scam.

Evite email scams are on the rise. Scammers are impersonating legitimate invitation-sending sites like Evite, PunchBowl and PaperlessPost to send fake invites.

What Is the Fake Evite Scam?

The Evite email scam is a phishing scam where scammers impersonate Evite, a legitimate site for sending party invitations.

When we receive an email, we rarely check the email address to confirm the sender. This is the mistake scammers exploit. The Evite scam email looks almost identical to an actual email you would receive from Evite itself, so it's easy to fall for.

You open the email to view the invite, but it takes you to a login page where you have to enter your email address and password. If you do so, your account gets hacked.

What Happens When You Click

When you click the RSVP button in a fake Evite email, it takes you to a fake login page. If you enter your email and password, the scammer can steal your credentials.

Once they get hold of your account, they can change the password, get access to other platforms connected to that account or use your account to send Evite phishing emails to your contacts.

What if you simply clicked the link?

If you only clicked the link without entering your credentials, you might still get hacked. Clicking the link can download malware on your device or steal your browser cookies, with which the hackers can indirectly steal your login credentials.

How to Identify a Fake Evite Email

To know if an Evite email you received is real or not, make sure to check the following:

• Check the Sender Email Address
  Always check that the sender's email address ends in @evite.com. Scammers use lookalike domains to trick you. And even if the email appears to come from a legitimate contact, it could still be fake. Scammers sometimes hijack real email accounts to send phishing emails to that person's contacts.

• Login Prompts
  A real Evite email won't prompt you to log in to view the invitation or RSVP. An Evite email that requires you to log in to do so is a phishing email trying to steal your login credentials.

• Spot Poor Grammar, Typos or Generic Greetings
  Generic greetings such as "Dear friend" are usually a sign of scam emails. Another giveaway of scam emails is typos and poor grammar. Official communication is almost always proofread and rarely includes such mistakes.

• Verify With the Sender Directly
  With the Evite phishing scam on the rise, it doesn't hurt to be extra careful. It's always best to text or call the person to confirm if they actually sent the invitation. Confirming the invitation's authenticity can help prevent your account credentials from being stolen.

• Hover Over Links Before Clicking
  On desktop, hover over the RSVP button to see the real destination URL. If it doesn't go to evite.com, don't click. It's a phishing link.

On mobile, press and hold the link to preview the URL before opening it.

• Watch for Attachments
  A real Evite invitation email will never contain any PDF or ZIP files. If you see any attachment in the email, DO NOT click on it. Scammers use attachments to install malware on your device.

What to Do If You Already Clicked?

Accidentally clicked a link in a fake Evite email? Don't panic. But don't wait either. Take these steps immediately to minimize the damage.

• Clear Your Browser Cookies & Cache
  Clicking the link in a phishing email can let attackers steal your active login session through cookies stored in your browser without ever needing your password. Clear your cookies and cache to invalidate any stolen session data.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + Delete (Mac), set the time range to All time, check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then click Clear data.

• Run a Full Antivirus Scan
  Clicking the link in a phishing email can download malware on your device even if you didn't enter your credentials on a login page. Run a full antivirus scan (not a quick one) to make sure it's found and removed. Use a trusted antivirus software such as Avast or McAfee.

• Change Your Passwords
  Immediately change the password of your Gmail/Google account. Then do the same for any platforms where you used the same password or signed in with Google, such as social media, shopping sites, or banking apps.

• Enable Two-Factor Authentication
  Enable two-factor authentication on your Gmail account, banking apps and any other important accounts. It helps secure your account against unauthorized logins even if the scammer gets hold of your password.

Gmail doesn't provide a button to whitelist an email address, but you can leverage Gmail filters and other workarounds to add a safe sender.

Method 1: Create a filter (most reliable)

To whitelist an email address, create a Gmail filter with a rule to never mark an email from that specific email address as spam.

Here's how to set up the Gmail filter:

1. Click on the Show earch options icon to the right of the search bar at the top.

2. In the From field, type the email address you want to whitelist (add to allowlist).
3. Click Create filter at the bottom.

4. Choose the Never send it to Spam option.
5. Finally, click Create filter.

Method 2: Add Sender to Google Contacts

Another method you can try to whitelist an email address is to add that sender as a Google Contact. This will let Gmail know that it's a trusted sender, although this method is not as reliable as setting up a Gmail filter to never send it to Spam, which we discussed in the previous section.

Here's how to add a sender as a Google Contact.

1. Open Google Contacts.
2. Click on the hamburger menu on the left, then click Create Contact.

3. Type the name and email address of the person you want to create a contact for.
4. Click the Save button at the top.

Method 3: Mark as "Not Spam"

If an email from a trusted sender is marked as Spam, open the email and select the "Not Spam" option from the toolbar at the top.

Doing so will move that message to your inbox and will do the same for any future emails from that email address. However, occasional messages from that sender may still get marked as Spam, depending on the message content or any Gmail filters set up.

How to Whitelist an Email on iPhone or Android

The most reliable way to whitelist an email address is to set up a filter, but unfortunately, the Gmail mobile app doesn't let you create one. So, you are left with two options:

Add the sender to Contacts through the Contacts app on your phone.
Report the email as "Not Spam" if one is already in your Spam folder.

These methods are not guaranteed to work every time. To receive important emails from a sender, it's recommended to set up a Gmail filter through the desktop browser. That filter will work on the Gmail mobile app as well.

How to Whitelist a Domain in Gmail

Sometimes you don't want to whitelist just one person - you want to allow every email from an entire organization. The process is nearly identical to Method 1, with one difference:

Follow the filter steps above, but in the From field, enter the domain instead of a full address - for example, @company.com.

Complete the filter as usual, checking Never send it to Spam.

Whitelisting for Google Workspace Admins

If you manage Gmail for an organization, you may want to whitelist an email address or a domain for your team to ensure important emails are not flagged as spam. Similarly, Google Workspace Admin Console allows you to block specific email addresses or domains for your team to protect against spam and phishing attacks.

How to Enable the Send and Archive Button

The button is hidden by default, so you'll need to turn it on first.

1. Click the gear icon in the top right of Gmail, then click "See all settings."

2. On the "General" tab, scroll down until you see "Send and Archive."

How to Use It

Once enabled, reply to any email and you'll see two buttons side by side: "Send" and "Send & Archive."

• Click Send & Archive to send your reply and archive the conversation at the same time, removing it from your inbox.

Archived emails aren't deleted. They're moved out of your inbox but still live in your All Mail folder, and you can find them anytime by clicking "All Mail" in the left sidebar, or by searching in:archive followed by a keyword (for example, in:archive invoice).

This button only appears when you're replying to an existing conversation. You won't see it when composing a brand new email, since there's nothing to archive yet.

This feature is only available in Gmail on desktop or in a web browser. It doesn't appear in the Gmail mobile app for Android or iOS, so on mobile you'll need to reply and then swipe to archive the conversation separately.

Gmail doesn't have a separate keyboard shortcut for Send & Archive, but once you enable the button, it becomes the default action for the standard send shortcut. Pressing Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on Mac) while composing a reply will send and archive the conversation, not just send it. Keep this in mind if you're used to using Ctrl+Enter and don't want every reply archived automatically.

What Happens If They Reply Back?

If the person you emailed replies to the thread after you've archived it, the entire conversation, including their new message, will automatically return to your inbox. Archiving doesn't mean you'll miss a response; it just clears the thread out of your way until there's something new to see.

Send and Archive for Inbox Zero Workflows

This button is especially popular among people practicing an "inbox zero" approach to email, since it collapses the usual two-step process (send, then go archive it) into a single click. If you reply to a lot of emails that don't need to stay in your inbox afterward, this small change can save a meaningful amount of time over the course of a day.

Common Issues

The button isn't showing up after I enabled it. Make sure you scrolled all the way to the bottom of the Settings page and clicked "Save Changes." The setting won't take effect until it's saved.

The button is enabled, but it's not showing on this specific email. If the conversation you're replying to is already archived, for example if you're viewing it from "All Mail" or a label instead of your inbox, Gmail may not show the Send & Archive button, since there's nothing left to archive.

1. Log in to shein.com.

3. Toggle off any communications you don't want to receive, e.g., emails, SMS, etc.

How to Stop SHEIN Text Messages

If you opted into SMS alerts at checkout or signup, reply STOP to any text from SHEIN. This opts you out of their SMS marketing list. You can also turn SMS off from the Contact Preferences page above.

How to Block SHEIN Emails If They Keep Coming

Unsubscribing from SHEIN emails may take a few days to take effect, and in some cases, the emails may still not stop.

If that's the case, you can block the sender directly in your email provider.

In Gmail

1. Open any email from SHEIN.
2. Click the three-dot menu on the right-hand side.
3. Select Block SHEIN from the dropdown menu.
4. Click Block in the pop-up menu.

Once you've blocked a SHEIN email address, all future emails from that email address will land in the Spam folder.

Your inbox will now prioritize unread messages.

If you recently took the PSAT or SAT, your inbox is probably flooded with emails from colleges you've never heard of. You're not alone, and there are a few ways to stop them.

There are a few ways to stop them:

• Unsubscribe from individual college emails
• Use Gmail filters to auto-delete or archive them
• Opt out of College Board's Student Search Service
• Use a tool like Block Sender to block them

In this article, we'll show you how to stop each one.

Why You're Getting These Emails

One of the most common reasons is the College Board's Student Search Service. If you opted in during PSAT or SAT registration (or didn't realize you had), colleges may receive your contact information and begin sending recruitment emails.

Method 1: Unsubscribe from Individual College Emails

The first thing you should try to stop college emails is to unsubscribe from each email. The way to do this is to use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email.

Make sure that the email is legitimate before clicking the unsubscribe link, as it could possibly be a scam email. If you're unsure, block the email instead of clicking any links.

Note that you may still receive emails from a college even after unsubscribing. And if you're receiving emails from 50+ colleges, the unsubscribe process can take a LOT of time.

Method 2: Block College Emails in Gmail

If you're getting emails from dozens of different colleges, blocking them one by one isn't practical. A faster approach is to create a Gmail filter that automatically deletes or archives any email containing words commonly used in college recruitment emails.

Here's how to set it up:

1. Open Gmail and click the Show search options icon on the right side of the search bar.

2. In the Has the words field, paste the following:

admissions OR "apply now" OR "undergraduate admission" OR enrollment OR "prospective student" OR "campus visit" OR "financial aid"

3. Click Create filter.

4. Select Delete it or Skip the Inbox (Archive it) depending on your preference
5. Click Create filter to save

Once the filter is active, any incoming email containing these phrases will be automatically deleted or archived without hitting your inbox.

Note: A few of these phrases like "financial aid" or "enrollment" could also appear in emails from schools you're actually enrolled in or applied to. If you want to keep those, consider removing those specific phrases from the filter, or whitelist those senders first.

Method 3: Opt Out at the Source

The methods above help you deal with college emails that are already coming in. But if you want to reduce the number of emails you get in the first place, you'll want to opt out of the programs that are feeding colleges your contact information.

To opt out of College Board's Student Search Service:

1. Log in to your account at my.collegeboard.org/profile/privacy.
2. Navigate to the Privacy Settings tab.
3. Find the Student Search Service option and turn it off.

If you took the ACT, it's worth opting out of ACT Recruit Me as well. You can do this by filling out the opt-out form at act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/opting-out-of-eos.html.

One important thing to keep in mind: opting out stops colleges from receiving your information going forward, but it won't stop emails from colleges that have already downloaded your data. If you're still getting emails after opting out, that's why - and the methods in the previous sections will help you deal with those.

Method 4: Block College Emails with Block Sender

If you're getting emails from 20, 30, or even 50 different colleges, blocking them one by one isn't ideal. That's where Block Sender comes in.

Block Sender is a Gmail extension that lets you create blocking rules based on keywords, phrases, sender addresses, or domains and apply them to every incoming email automatically. Instead of hunting down each college's email address, you can create a phrase-based rules for keywords like "admissions" or "apply now" and Block Sender will catch any email containing that phrase before it ever hits your inbox.

Here's how to set it up:

1. Install the Block Sender browser extension and link your Gmail account.
2. Click the Block button in your Gmail toolbar and select New Block.

3. Choose Phrase from the dropdown and enter a keyword like "admissions" or "enrollment"
4. Select your preferred action Delete or Archive and save the rule.

You can repeat this for as many keywords as you want. A handful of well-chosen phrases will cover the vast majority of college recruitment emails, regardless of which school is sending them.

One other useful feature: if you have more than one Gmail account, say, a parent who wants to manage both their own inbox and their child's, Block Sender lets you link multiple accounts and share blocking rules between them, so you only have to set things up once.

Using Search Filters to Find Old Emails

The first step in deleting old emails in Gmail is to find them. Fortunately, Gmail offers date search operators that can help with that.

Note: Use the Gmail desktop version for mass deleting emails, as the mobile app doesn't have this feature.

Type your search query in the search bar at the top and hit enter. For example,

older_than:1y

The above query returns all emails that have been sitting in your inbox for more than a year.

You can also find emails that were sent or received before a particular date.

Combining Search Operators

You can also combine operators for a more precise search result.

older_than:6m AND before:01/01/2025

The above query will delete only those emails sent or received before January 1, 2025, that are also older than six months.

Returns all promotional emails older than one month.

Retrieves all emails from the email address noreply@company.com that were received before January 1, 2025.

is:unread AND older_than:6m
Deletes all unread emails older than 6 months.

Selecting and Deleting Old Emails in Gmail

Once you've filtered out all the old emails you want to delete, the next step is to select them and move them to the Trash folder. To bulk-select emails, click the checkbox at the top. This only selects the emails shown on the current page. To select all emails, click "Select all conversations that match this search".

Next, click the "Trash" icon on the toolbar. Confirm the delete action by clicking "Ok".

The time it takes to delete all the selected emails depends on the number and size of emails.

Emptying the Trash

The old emails you deleted in the previous step will not be removed from your account right away. Instead, Gmail moves them to the Trash folder and waits for 30 days before permanently deleting them.

Note: You have 30 days to restore the emails from the Trash folder if you change your mind. After this point, the emails cannot be recovered.

You can manually clear the Trash folder if you urgently need free space in your Gmail account. To do so, navigate to the Trash folder. Click "Empty Trash now" and confirm the deletion.

Automatically Delete Old Emails in Gmail

You may wonder if there's a way to automatically delete emails after a set period of time, so you don't have to repeat the process every few months or years. Currently, Gmail doesn't have such a feature at the time of writing this article.

Gmail filters also cannot help with this because they only apply to incoming emails. However, you can use a Gmail add-on to automatically delete emails after a certain time. Or if you have basic programming knowledge, you can set up an automation script using Google Apps Script that runs periodically and deletes emails older than one year.
